In today’s busy world, keeping up with household chores can be challenging. One task that cannot be overlooked is the cleaning of clothes. It’s no wonder that having a washing machine is considered a common necessity in many households. However, over time, soap residue, detergent minerals, and other debris can build up inside the machine, leading to unpleasant odors that can transfer to your clothes. To ensure your clothes come out smelling fresh every time, it’s essential to clean your washing machine regularly.
Step 1: Run a Hot Cycle with Vinegar or Bleach
Start by running an empty cycle on the hottest setting. Add two cups of white vinegar or a quart of bleach to the detergent dispenser. The hot water combined with vinegar or bleach helps eliminate and prevent bacteria growth, and it can also act as a deodorizer, cutting through any mildew odors. If you’re using bleach, let the machine run for a minute to mix the bleach with the water, then let it sit for an hour before completing the cycle.
Step 2: Scrub the Inside of the Washing Machine
Next, mix about 1/4 cup of vinegar with a quart of warm water in a bucket or sink. Use this solution, along with a sponge and a dedicated toothbrush, to clean the inside of the machine. Pay special attention to the dispensers for fabric softener or soap, the inside and around the door opening. If your soap dispenser is removable, soak it in the vinegar solution before scrubbing.
Step 3: Clean the Washing Machine Exterior
After cleaning the inside, give the machine’s exterior a wipe-down using a damp cloth and the vinegar-water solution. This will help maintain the machine’s appearance and prevent any buildup of dust or detergent on the outside.
Step 4: Run a Second Hot Cycle
Finally, run another empty cycle on the hottest setting. If desired, add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the drum to help clear away any loosened buildup. After the cycle is complete, wipe out the inside of the drum with a microfiber cloth to remove any remaining residue.
For front-loading washing machines, it’s crucial to clean the rubber seal around the door regularly, as this area can harbor mold and mildew, leading to unpleasant odors. Spray the area with distilled white vinegar, let it sit for at least a minute, then wipe clean with a microfiber cloth. To prevent mold or mildew growth, leave the door open for a few hours after each wash to let the moisture dry out.
Cleaning your washing machine should be done at least once a month to keep it in optimal condition. Regular maintenance not only keeps your machine smelling fresh but also extends its lifespan, ensuring it serves you well for years to come.
